Cardinals Release Colt McCoy

The Arizona Cardinals no longer employ Colt McCoy, clearing way for a new starting quarterback on opening day.

The Arizona Cardinals made some massive decisions on Monday as the deadline to trim rosters to 53 players looms tomorrow, the first of which came in the form of not activating Kyler Murray from the PUP list - meaning he will miss at least the first four games of the season.

Colt McCoy was favored to fill that spot until recently, when the Cardinals traded for Josh Dobbs and put even more uncertainty into Arizona's quarterback room.

Now, McCoy is reportedly off the roster according to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter.

"And now the Cardinals have released veteran QB Colt McCoy, per league sources. Either veteran Josh Dobbs, whom Arizona acquired last week, or rookie fifth-round pick QB Clayton Tune will start opening day at Washington," he wrote in one tweet before following up with, "Josh Dobbs figures to be the leader to become Arizona’s opening-day starting QB.

"The Cardinals tried to sign him in free agency. They traded for him last week. And he know the Cardinals’ system from having played under Arizona OC Drew Petzing last season in Cleveland."

The move isn't a shock given how McCoy played during preseason time. He had elbow surgery in the offseason and wasn't able to throw on a consistent basis in training camp or preseason.

McCoy's age and durability have been a concern in the desert for the past few seasons. Now, a new Cardinals regime have shown they're willing to wipe the slate clean after moving on from vets such as McCoy and Isaiah Simmons in the last few days.

Clayton Tune has garnered the attention of fans with his play and mobility - we'll see if that can ultimately be the difference with Dobbs now in the mix.

Arizona will be in Washington for their Week 1 opener.
