Jim Harbaugh Reveals His Coaching Pipeline Secret Weapon

The Los Angeles Chargers are looking to move forward this offseason with a new defensive coordinator after Jesse Minter was hired as the Baltimore Ravens head coach. Replacing an elite coordinator, like Minter, is never an easy or simple task.

Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh has been effective in finding new coaches to replace departing coordinators over the past few years. Minter himself was a replacement defensive coordinator at the University of Michigan for Mike Macdonald, who had been hired by Jim's brother, John Harbaugh, to become the Baltimore Ravens new defensive coordinator.

The Chargers utilized a connection from Jesse Minter to find his heir in Chris O'Leary. Minter and O'Leary go back to Minter's early days as a coach at Georgia State.

Jim Harbaugh's son Jay Harbaugh has been coaching since 2008 when he got his start as a student assistant at Oregon State. Jay got his start under former Chargers head coach Mike Riley at Oregon State. Riley was the Chargers head coach during the years that Jim Harbaugh was a quarterback for the Chargers from 1999-2000.

Jay has risen the ranks with the help of a few family connections, jumping to the NFL as quality control coach for the Baltimore Ravens under his uncle John Harbaugh before joining his father Jim at Michigan. Jay took over as special teams coordinator for the Wolverines in 2019.
