1 Quote and a National Spotlight at Chargers Training Camp Hint at Big Things in 2026

The national scene hits Chargers training camp and likes what it seems from Jim Harbaugh and Mike McDaniel.

It didn’t take long for Los Angeles Chargers fans to see all the positives of the Mike McDaniel hiring, which paired him with head coach Jim Harbaugh and elite quarterback Justin Herbert. 

Free from the likes of Greg Roman and a long, long, exhausting list of other coaching names to roll through Los Angeles over the years, watching Herbert finally get a modern offensive mind like McDaniel sort of felt like an offseason Super Bowl. 

Now that preseason games are almost here, the national side has started to catch up with these ideas a bit. That’s especially the case when seeing how things have worked out on the field, plus more quotes from McDaniel and Harbaugh, too. 

The result? Even more hype for Chargers fans, too.

Offseason moves hinted that the Chargers gave McDaniel pretty much free rein over what he wants to do with the offense. 

McDaniel's moves included adding fullback Alec Ingold, tight ends Charlie Kolar and David Njoku, running back Keaton Mitchell, an entirely new interior offensive line and even drafting wideout Brenen Thompson. 

So, every layer of the depth chart while revamping the scheme and fits. 

Oh, and McDaniel forced Herbert to rework his footwork and approach in certain packages while installing an entirely new offense. 

Fast forward to camp, the results look good and for some, like Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, the quotes kick things into overdrive. That’s especially true when McDaniel talks about the freedom he’s been given by Harbaugh.

“And he really fosters the maximum out of me because he gives me responsibility and doesn’t micromanage things I earned, in his opinion, that he’s comfortable with me taking ownership of,” McDaniel said. “ He’s just an elite leader that way. … Our relationship couldn’t be stronger.”

Look no further than the running back room. McDaniel just told onlookers that he’s going to ride the hot hand regardless of whether it’s Omarion Hampton, Keaton Mitchell or Kimani Vidal.

The modernized unpredictability of it all might fluster fantasy football managers, but from a national perspective, the Chargers feel more dangerous than ever. 

Good thing McDaniel gets the all-clear from Harbaugh, too: This might be his only year with the Chargers. If they match the hype, there’s little doubt he will instantly become one of the top names on the head-coach hiring cycle again.
