Chargers Finally Exit Trade Speculation For 49ers Star

The Chargers should probably stay away from this option.

In this story:

It's widely known that the Los Angeles Chargers need another weapon. Almost one month since the beginning of free agency, they haven't added that missing piece yet. It's not surprising, as Joe Hortiz has shown no urgency in recent years to shop at the top of the market for premier players.

Still, as it stands now, the Chargers are basically running it back with the same group of receivers. That simply can't happen. The only change will be losing Keenan Allen, the franchise legend who remains a free agent. The Chargers desperately need that top option to lead their receiving corps.

They've been linked to a plethora of 'big' names throughout the offseason, most notably A.J. Brown. At this point, the Chargers would have to scour the trade market if they want that caliber of a player. Even if a trade comes about during the season near the deadline, the Chargers need to keep tabs on players they'd want. Could one of those be Brandon Aiyuk?

The 49ers star has had a disastrous 2025 after failing to properly communicate with the team during his ACL/MCL recovery. Aiyuk signed a four-year, $120 million deal before the 2024 season, appearing in 7 games before injuring his knee.

When listing the best landing spots for Aiyuk's services, the Chargers finally weren't listed.

Chargers not among best fits for Brandon Aiyuk

One would think the Chargers should be on this list, given their need at receiver. Not only that, but the fact that new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel worked with Aiyuk during their time in San Francisco. Still, Moe Moton of Bleacher Report doesn't think Aiyuk is LA bound.

"The San Francisco 49ers aren't in a rush to move Brandon Aiyuk, and they're willing to be patient in hopes that a trade partner will offer something for him," Moton wrote. "The team shouldn't expect much, but he may be too talented to be released outright. Aiyuk tore his ACL and MCL midway through the 2024 campaign. He then went through a gradual rehab process complicated by his lack of cooperation and communication with the club."

Moton listed five teams that would best fit Aiyuk: Cleveland Browns, Tennessee Titans, New Orleans Saints, Miami Dolphins and Washington Commanders.

Seeing as how his 49ers tenure ended, Aiyuk won't garner much in a trade. A late-round pick will likely be the return, which the Chargers could certainly give up if they so please.
