Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes Returns to Practice After Knee Injury
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Chiefs haven't ruled out the possibility that quarterback Patrick Mahomes could play Sunday night when the team hosts the Green Bay Packers as he recovers from a dislocated kneecap suffered last Thursday.
Head coach Andy Reid said Mahomes would throw and take part in individual drills, but backup Matt Moore will take a “good percentage of the reps” in practice Wednesday.
“Patrick will go do a few things and we'll just see how he does,” Reid said. “We evaluate him every day that he's out there. In the meantime, Matt will take the reps with Patrick at the quarterback spots.”
During the portion of practice open to the media, Mahomes took part in stretching and individual drills. He generally took the No. 4 reps behind Matt Moore, Kyle Shurmur and Chad Henne. Mahomes appeared to move gingerly while proceeding through throws, drops and play action during individual drills.
The idea of Mahomes playing just 10 days after suffering a gruesome kneecap dislocation seemed unlikely even a few days ago. The Chiefs, however, continue expressing optimism regarding the severity and how Mahomes performs in rehab. Reid said Mahomes has been attacking his rehab assignments.
“I think it was important that he heard from the doctors and the trainer that he could proceed and that things would be OK as he went forward,” Reid said. “He's been full steam ahead, that's what he's been doing. But that's the way he does everything. He's going to try to do it the way and work hard, that's what he's been doing.”
In fact, Reid said Mahomes wanted to go back in against the Broncos after X-rays showed no break in the kneecap.
“After it happened, he thought he could go back in,” Reid said. “That's how he's wired. He's wired a little different that way.”
