Commanders Have No Excuses on Offense Under Eric Bieniemy

With Eric Bieniemy as the new offensive coordinator, what are the Washington Commanders' expectations heading into next season?

The Washington Commanders have a new offensive coordinator in Eric Bieniemy as the franchise looks to improve on last year's output.

After being in a position to secure a playoff spot before ultimately capitulating, Washington needed a fresh set of eyes on the offense.

So... what can we expect from the Commanders offensively next season?

For starters, if fans think Bieniemy will be able to bring what he did in Kansas City to Washington, think again.

In his five years as offensive coordinator, Bieniemy never had the Chiefs ranked lower than sixth in the league for points scored and never averaged under 28 points a game.

Plus ... he had Patrick Mahomes.

Can that be replicated with the Commanders? Likely no, but there is still plenty to work with in the nation's capital.

With Jack Del Rio's defense being ranked seventh in the NFL for points allowed per game (20.2), the offense needs to come to the party.

Only averaging 18.9 points per game, we can safely assume that with Bieniemy at the helm and the likes of Jahan Dotson, Curtis Samuel, and Terry McLaurin are all expected to improve on their stat lines from last season, Washington offensively should be more of a threat.

Depending on what the quarterback situation is will also go a long way in determining Washington's offensive output. Sam Howell impressed in Week 18 against the Dallas Cowboys, and if he is given the keys, Bieniemy can keep things simple and "quarterback" friendly for the second-year man out of North Carolina.

Ultimately, the Commanders should see improvement on the offensive side of the ball, which is where it needs help. In Bieniemy, they have a coordinator who rubbed shoulders with Andy Reid for five years and won two Super Bowls.

Now in Washington, Bieniemy runs his own ship, which can only bode well for the franchise. But how much improvement can we expect?

More innovative and creative ideas will no doubt come and considering how close playoff football was last year, and now mixed with the new scheme, that has to be the minimum expectation in 2023.
