Washington Commanders Coach & GM Openings: 'Most Attractive Jobs in NFL'?

How attractive are the Washington Commanders as a franchise for 2024, all working on the assumption that new team owner Josh Harris will at season's end fire coach Ron Rivera and his guys, including GM Martin Mayhew, and start anew?

That attractiveness of the two possible vacancies is a matter of opinion, but we must say: A new report that essentially suggests that the Commanders openings would represent the NFL's most coveted jobs is headline-grabbing stuff ... and so we wonder why CBS Sports, in making the assertion, buries that information in the 14th paragraph of a 17-paragraph story.

The "news" isn't the possible dismissal of Rivera; barring an incredible turnaround for this 4-8 team, that is all but assumed. And because the front office people here are mostly Rivera-guided hires (Mayhew included), a clean sweep of this management team is a logical guess when it comes to Harris' long-term thinking.

But this quote from an NFL source to CBS Sports? "Everyone's shooting for (a job in) Washington"? With the author adding, "There will be a search for a head coach, and very possibly a general manager, in Washington this offseason. And both jobs are thought to be among the most attractive in the NFL"?

Hey, CBS Sports, we're trying to mind our own business here, but ... that's the news.

Washington fans, we'd recommend, should look at the situation this way: When was the last time this franchise was perceived as being a "most attractive" landing spot for a coach and a GM?

The fact is, as since 1978, no coach other than Joe Gibbs has led Washington to the playoffs more than once in their tenure here, this is a place where coaching careers come to die.

The 2024 Commanders have draft picks, cap room and an owner not named "Dan Snyder." That's reason for optimism. Do they also offer the sort of allure that would attract a Bill Belichick - or, ideally, create a race for jobs so full of great candidates that Belichick, at 71, might not even be the most attractive?

The Commanders as a No. 1 desired landing spot would be a heck of a story, if it's true. And if it's true? It's one of the most lead-story-worthy developments to come out of this place in forever.
