NFL Draft: Commanders GM Martin Mayhew at Alabama Pro Day

Ahead of the 2023 NFL Draft, Washington Commanders general manager Martin Mayhew is making his rounds during the Pro Day cycle - which includes a stop at the University of Alabama.

The Washington Commanders entered last season with eight former Alabama Crimson Tide players on their active roster, tied for second-most around the NFL.

And Commanders general manager Martin Mayhew is still looking for more ... literally.

Per the Reese's Senior Bowl, Mayhew was one of 12 general managers in attendance at Alabama's Pro Day Thursday - though Washington's Ron Rivera was not one of the 10 head coaches present.

Among the notable players who worked out include quarterback Bryce Young, outside linebacker Will Anderson Jr. and defensive back Brian Branch, all projected top-20 picks in the 2023 NFL Draft with the first two likely off the board within the first five selections.

The Commanders drafted a pair of Alabama alums last year in defensive tackle Phidarian Mathis (second round) and running back Brian Robinson Jr. (third round).

The total number of Crimson Tide players currently on Washington sits at four - Mathis, Robinson Jr. and defensive tackles Da'Ron Payne and Jonathan Allen.

Mayhew's trip to Tuscaloosa comes on the heels of a stop by Ohio State's Pro Day, which took place Wednesday in Columbus. Sports Illustrated reported that Mayhew was one of 10 general managers who attended the pre-draft showing.

Of note, Washington is set to host Buckeyes right tackle Dawand Jones for a top-30 visit, one of seven scheduled trips for the 6-8, 374-pound blocker.

In other words, with free agency officially past the initial wave, draft-related business is picking up - and Mayhew has certainly been at the forefront.
