Commanders GM Adam Peters Reveals Thoughts on QB's at NFL Scouting Combine

Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters talks all things quarterbacks from Caleb Williams to Drake Maye and more.

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Scouting Combine is getting underway with Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters speaking to the media first, and right off the bat he was asked about the quarterback situation.

As is the tradition at the yearly scouting event the Commanders GM fielded questions from media stemming from various outlets and areas, and he was asked about the quarterback situation first through the lens of San Francisco 49ers draft find, Brock Purdy.

"His tape was what really turned us on and then you meet the person," Peters said looking back on the process that led to the 49ers drafting their eventual franchise quarterback. "This is only a little part of the process but his tape that he (had) at Iowa State and how well he plays, how well he played the position, we really thought that he could fit in well with our scheme...we liked him that much, now I gotta find a new quarterback."

That last part is probably what folks in Washington will latch on to, 'finding a new quarterback'.

Now, whether Peters meant specifically they aren't interested in moving forward with Sam Howell as the team's starting quarterback, the first-year GM made it clear the team is not just talking to one or two at the NFL Scouting Combine this year, but a lot of them.

To that end, we could read into it they're turning over every stone to replace Howell, but also looking between the lines that Howell is very much still in the conversation based on what Peters said later on in his press session.

"We really like what we have in Sam right now, we're really excited about that too," said Peters. "Sam came to the facility a couple of weeks ago and we got a chance to hang out and instead of just sitting in my office we just took a walk...Got to know him a bit better so I feel really good about him too. We got a lot of different things we can do, but still really excited about him."

Howell had a lot of production in his one year as a starting NFL quarterback, but also had a lot of bumps and bruises along the way that ultimately led to extremely high interception and sack totals.

Regardless of what happens from mid-March to the end of April, that decision alone won't be made In Indianapolis, and while three of the top quarterbacks in this year's NFL Draft won't workout at the combine, the most important parts for a GM will still be conducted.

"The two biggest things - everybody says it - it's the medical portion, which I'm not a part of that I just see all of the results, and then the interviews," Peters said. "We're going to interview a lot of quarterbacks as well as a lot of other players here. So that's really the first touch point that we'll have with these guys. I haven't met any of them in person, and I'm really excited to meet them. We're going to meet some of them tonight, (and) some of them tomorrow, and that's just the beginning of the process in terms of that. It's a huge part of really any position is getting to know the person."
