NFL Free Agency: Should Commanders Re-Sign Kam Curl?

The Washington Commanders have a host of decisions to make this offseason, and with a host of free agents set to walk out the door, Kamren Curl is perhaps the franchise's biggest looming decision.

It is an offseason of change for the Washington Commanders and one that is a long time coming. There is already a new owner Josh Harris along with a new general manager in Adam Peters.

The next step is for a new head coach to be named as Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn is looming as a top candidate. Once that is completed, attention will turn to which players Washington wants around for this exciting new era, and which ones they don't.

With so many free agents set to walk out the door, it is going to be hard to keep them all, but ESPN suggests that safety Kamren Curl needs to be No. 1 on the list of players to bring back.

"The Commanders have 20 unrestricted free agents, including receiver Curtis Samuel and cornerback Kendall Fuller," ESPN writes. "But one member of the previous staff said Washington must re-sign Curl because of his versatility. With only one career interception, he's not a playmaker, but he's a smart, steady player who plays well in the box and can also rotate deep. It's hard to know what the team will do, however, with a new coach still to be named -- and a new defense to come with him."

Denver Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton (14) is tackled by Washington Commanders safety Kamren Curl (31) and linebackers Cody Barton (57) and Jamin Davis (52) in the fourth quarter at Empower Field at Mile High.

So it appears that Curl needs to be retained, but that might be easier said than done.

Per spotrac.com, Curl has a market value of a cool $14.4 million APY, which could make the Commanders balk at the thought of signing him. However, in an offseason of sweeping change, having one constant in a defensive setup that was sliced and diced far too easily could prove beneficial.

Curl played 16 out of a possible 17 games for Ron Rivera's Commanders and was a beacon of consistent production. Not known for being a stat-stuffing safety, Curl as ESPN writes, is versatile and that will give the incoming head coach something to think about scheme-wise.

We know what we are going to get from Curl on a week-to-week basis and given that the defense could look vastly different this upcoming season, having an everpresent, young safety in the heart of the defense could be just the move to counter all the change the franchise will be experiencing.

It won't be cheap, but Curl returning to Washington would be a smart move...we just have to see if the incoming head coach has a similar line of thought.
