NFL Mock Draft: Commanders Make 'Bold Ascension' For Caleb Williams

The Washington Commanders hold the No. 2 overall pick in the upcoming draft, and the franchise decides to pair offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury with Caleb Williams.

Just what the Washington Commanders do with their No. 2 overall pick is quite the head-scratcher. With a host of talented quarterbacks within their reach, which Washington goes, it will be interesting come draft day.

But we might have already gotten a sense of where the line of thought is with the hiring of Kliff Kingsbury as offensive coordinator. Kingsbury was the senior offensive analyst for USC in 2023. Why is that important?

Well, Washington now has a person very familiar with Caleb Williams' game and skill set. As such, CBS Sports has the Commanders trading up to the No. 1 spot and grabbing Williams to lead the franchise.

"The Commanders make the bold ascension to pair Williams with Kliff Kingsbury in the nation's capital. New owner Josh Harris puts his stamp on his team," CBS Sports writes.

Williams

The writing has been on the wall since the Commanders were locked into the No. 2 pick that a quarterback would be taken. But with the likes of Williams, North Carolina's Drake Maye, and LSU's Jayden Daniels all expected to go early in the draft, which way Washington wanted to go was unknown.

It is a little less unknown now with the Kingsbury hire...we think.

While it is tough to predict these things, as the Chicago Bears could easily rebuff any trade proposal that the Commanders send their way and select Williams themselves, they have to deal with Justin Fields first.

The Commanders have no such issues with Sam Howell, as it is thought he will simply be the backup to whichever quarterback comes to the nation's capital.

There is so much speculation about who will get drafted and where, and given we are still a while away from knowing those answers, it does feel like the scales have ever so slightly tipped Washington's way in their bid to potentially land Williams.

Was hiring Kingsbury a sneaky ploy to lure Williams, a D.C. native, to Washington? Time will tell.
