Commanders Rival Eagles Losing LB to Retirement

With the season just weeks away the Washington Commanders will have one less thing to worry about as the Philadelphia Eagles are dealing with a preseason retirement on their defense.

The Washington Commanders weren’t the only NFC East Division team looking to upgrade their linebacker group this offseason.

While the Commanders brought free agent Cody Barton in from the Seattle Seahawks, the Philadelphia Eagles brought in several new linebacker faces.

One of those, Myles Jack, is reportedly retiring, putting the Eagles in a position where they now have to adjust their long term plans in in the second level of their defense.

“The linebacker, just a few weeks shy of his 28th birthday, informed Philadelphia that he intends to retire,” said an NFL.com report

Jack originally entered the league via the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft as a rookie with the Jacksonville Jaguars

After spending his first six seasons with the Jaguars, Jack made the move to Pennsylvania joining the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2022.

The linebacker played in 15 games for the Steelers starting 13 of them and racking up 104 tackles in the process.

It was his third straight season with over 100 tackles and fourth in seven seasons.

Still, Jack found himself a free agent by the time training camps around the league began, joining the Commanders rival in Philadelphia on August 6th.

At the time, Jack said he was looking to enter trade school if he couldn’t land on an NFL roster.

“I’m a hustler so I feel like I can do anything,” Jack told NBC Sports. “I like to work. I just couldn’t sit at home. I’ve been blessed to make a lot of money so I could just retire and sit at the house but I’m bored.”

Trying to make the Eagles roster seems to have resolved his boredom for some time, but now it would appear that time has come to a close.

As of Monday morning Philadelphia moved Jack from it’s active roster to the reserve/retired portion of the listing.

Some wondered why Washington brought in Barton with a guy like Jack still available on the open market.

It would appear that from a roster standpoint, the Commanders went with the right man, and the Eagles now have one less linebacker to use when trying to make a return trip to the top of the NFC East.
