Can Commanders QB Sam Howell Lead Team to Playoffs Under Eric Bieniemy?

Soon-to-be second year quarterback Sam Howell is firming as the team's starter, but under the guidance of Eric Bieniemy, can he lead his team to the postseason?

The Washington Commanders will enter next season with a sense of hope and optimism. After missing out on a playoff spot last year due to a spectacular collapse, moves have been made this offseason to strengthen the team.

There is a sense of excitement around the organization. With Carson Wentz and Taylor Heinicke out, the consensus is Sam Howell will be the Commanders starter, despite the signing of Jacoby Brissett. Add to that former Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, who takes up that role in the nation's capital.

But how far can Washington go with Howell at the wheel?

Bieniemy's track record in Kansas City is second to none, but he also has different players in Washington.

While it is only a small sample size, Howell looked capable in Week 18 last season against the Dallas Cowboys as he completed 11 of his 19 passes for 169 yards, one touchdown, and an interception. He also rushed for 35 yards and a touchdown on five carries.

Washington has also addressed the offensive line issues, signing Nick Gates and Andrew Wylie to help protect Howell in the pocket.

Add in the weapons the Commanders already have in running back Brian Robinson Jr., along with Terry McLaurin, Jahan Dotson, and Curtis Samuel, Bieniemy has plenty to work with. Not to mention what Washington does at the draft, either.

Washington was nearly a playoff team last season, and with many thinking that the team has upgraded with the addition of Bieniemy, Howell could be set for a good second season in the NFL.

As far as expectations, Bieniemy will put Howell in a position to succeed in his offense, and that should translate into success on the field for the young quarterback.

Make no mistake, playoff football is on the agenda for Ron Rivera's team in 2023 with Howell at the helm.
