An assortment of NFL mocks have linked the Washington Commanders to taking a defensive back with the No. 16 overall pick in Thursday's NFL Draft. Are they guessing right? Or do they know something?

One league source tells CommandersCountry.com at SI that they have it right - and that Joey Porter Jr. is the prospect being targeted. The phrase our source uses is "zeroing in on.''

It's too early to know this for certain yet, of course, and Washington picks just late enough in the process that the first 15 picks remain in many cases a guessing game. But there is no doubt that Washington has made a connection with Porter, the Penn State product who is the son of the former Pittsburgh Steelers standout.

And in terms of mock drafts? One of ESPN's latest two-round mocks had Washington taking Porter Jr. And an SI mock from Albert Breer does the same (while also floating the zaniest rumor of the week, that the Commanders are actually doing everything possible to draft USC QB Caleb Williams ... next year.)

Also worth noting: Peter King's mock has Porter slipping all the way to the Dallas Cowboys at pick No. 26, with Washington opting instead for the best safety in the draft in Brian Branch of Alabama.

What about quarterback? They are theoretically all gone by No. 16.

What about Porter's fit? He's a 6-2 cover guy who in 2022, Porter had a career-high eight pass breakups - including a school-record six against Purdue last September.

Does all of that add up to Washington being locked in on Joey Porter Jr.? Not yet. So "zeroing in'' will have to do for now.
