Jordan Reed ruled out for Redskins Week 1 game vs Eagles

While he was able to participate in some portions of practice over the last week, it appears Washington Redskins tight end Jordan Reed just isn't going to be ready to suit up against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. Reed suffered a concussion in the third preseason game when he was victim to an illegal helmet-to-helmet hit by Atlanta Falcons safety Keanu Neal.
Throughout the week, Reed has been taking the necessary steps to be cleared from the league's concussion protocol, but it now looks like he was unable to take the final step. According to The Athletic's Ben Standig, he will miss the game.
Jordan Reed (concussion) update. Based on what I heard overnight, I'd be surprised if he plays Sunday at Philly. Would mean tight end J.P. Holtz promoted from the PS and a corresponding move.

And made the following roster move: Waived WR Robert Davis and signed TE J.P. Holtz to the active roster.
There was a chance he was going to give it a go, as NBC Sports JP Findley said the team would know more on Saturday morning, but that time has arrived and apparently it's not going to happen.
Reed is a dynamic force on offense, but has been unable to stay on the field much. In his six-year career to this point, he's missed 31 of a possible 96 games, almost one-third of total contests. Many of those games have been related to concussion symptoms that date back to his collegiate days at the University of Florida. It's believed he's suffered at least seven documented concussions over his career.
Quarterback Case Keenum will now be without one of the league's best security blankets in his first start, as he tries to develop a rapport with his other targets. Veteran Vernon Davis will get the start in Reed's place, and third-year pro Jeremy Sprinkle will have increased duties as well.
It remains to be seen if Washington calls up J.P. Holtz to be a third active tight end. If they do so, there will need to be a corresponding move by the club to clear a roster space on the 53-man roster.
