The Washington Redskins have a deadline to make, but they don't - and won't - wait for it. Every NFL club has until 4:00 p.m. ET to trim their 90-man off-season roster down to the regular season limit of 53.

------
Major Update: WR Steve Sims will make the club, per John Keim.

A player who is a vested veteran, in the league with at least 4 accrued seasons, is released immediately when cut. He can sign anywhere. A player with less than 4 accrued seasons goes through the waiver process when cut. Any team (in draft order) can claim the contract of a waived player. After Noon eastern Sunday, an unclaimed waived player can sign with anyone.

Teams can either cut a player, trade them, or put them on one of the injured lists in order to remove them from the slate.

There are an abundance of rules for injury situations.

If a player was on the non-football injury list (NFI) or the active physically-unable-to-perform (PUP) list for the entirety of camp, they can be moved to the reserve PUP at the cut down and not count against the 53-man roster.

If the player is moved to PUP, they will have to miss the first six weeks of the regular season. After six weeks, the player has up to another six weeks to begin practicing. Once they begin practicing, if they begin practicing, the club has 21 days from that date to either activate the player or shut it down for the year.

If the player practiced at all in the preseason, even just once, this is not an option.

Any player who is placed on injured reserve before roster cuts is done for the year. The team cannot use one of their two return options (there's no longer a pre-designation requirement) on someone who is marked as such prior to the reduction. So if Washington has an injured player, say RB/returner Shaun Wilson, they want to use at sometime this year, they will have to include him on the initial 53-man roster, or waive him and hope he doesn't land with another team and wants to return.

If a team keeps a player on their 53-man roster, they can then immediately place them on IR, thus opening up a new roster spot. In other words, a team must risk letting someone hit the open market in order to have the option of activating said injured player later in the year. A player put on IR must spend 8 weeks there, and then can be activated at any point after that, up to two players per season.

Players who are on the reserved-did-not-report list, such as left tackle Trent Williams, didn't count against the off-season roster or salary cap, and will not count for the regular season until and only if they do report. Also, any player who is suspended (which Washington has none of) does not count towards the roster.

Here's a rundown of players associated with the Redskins who are on one of the early lists, and we'll keep updating as players are removed from the roster over the next 36 hours.
