Dallas Cowboys Draft Texas' 'Fastest-Ever' Xavier Worthy in New Mock

The Dallas Cowboys have done nothing to jumpstart the offense this offseason. Could bringing in the fastest player in the NFL Draft make for an upgrade?

Perhaps no word would describe the Dallas Cowboys offseason better than simply “uninspiring.” After a mostly silent free agency, nothing in the form of good news regarding quarterback Dak Prescott’s contract, and improvements to the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders, the Cowboys certainly don’t feel like they’re headed in the right direction.

As such, they’ll be forced to lean on April’s NFL Draft for both talent acquisition and optimism.

Picking 24th, this class should be generous to Dallas, at least early on. The Cowboys biggest needs are up front and on the boundary, finding replacements for center Tyler Biadasz, left tackle Tyron Smith, and receiver Michael Gallup. Both positions are stocked to the brim with talent, almost guaranteeing a quality prospect will be available when Dallas is on the clock.

Few, if any, would be more exciting than Texas receiver Xavier Worthy.

In The Ringer’s most recent mock draft, Dallas takes the speedster who set the record for the fastest 40-yard dash in NFL Scouting Combine history.

“The Cowboys are relatively thin at the receiver position outside of CeeDee Lamb, and they’ve never been a team that’s afraid to make a big splash,” Danny Kelly wrote. “Worthy lacks size at just 165 pounds, but he’s blazing fast and was extremely productive for the Longhorns over the past three seasons.”

Worthy, if nothing else, would be the most explosive player on the roster and demanding of serious attention. Dallas missed out on some explosives after running back Tony Pollard regressed and its ancillary targets failed to make a significant impact.

However, it’s worth questioning his fit in the Cowboys offense. He has his struggles over the middle of the field and dealing with physicality, and if he’s pushing Lamb out of the slot – where the superstar is at his best – Worthy’s true value may be mitigated.

“Worthy is elusive with the ball in his hands and thrives on short passes that get him yards-after-the-catch opportunities,” Kelly wrote.

Thus, there would still be reasons to get excited about a Worthy selection, even if it isn’t a picture-perfect fit. Prescott is a quick-game maestro, and anything can happen with the ball in Worthy’s hands. Manufacturing touches to someone with Worthy’s brand of athleticism is an easy way to create chunk gains.

Dallas has done little to help its quarterback this offseason, but when optimized correctly a skilled speedster can feel like a cheat code. Worthy staying in Texas could mean big things for the Cowboys.
