Cowboys Dak Prescott 'Hurting Legacy' By 'Mirroring' Tony Romo?

The Dallas Cowboys have struggled in the playoffs under Dak Prescott ... and Tony Romo ... and anyone playing QB in the last two decades.

The Dallas Cowboys have not made the NFC Championship in 27 years. Did you know that? Just kidding. That, it sometimes seems, is all anyone talks about. But now CBS Sports has created a new spin on the old problem and pinned Dak Prescott with Tony Romo in putting the Cowboys' playoff woes on the quarterbacks. ... and sort of tying them together by saying Dak is "mirroring'' Romo.

"Of course, playing quarterback for the Cowboys means competing for Super Bowl titles -- not early playoff exits," CBS Sports writes. "(But) Prescott has appeared in the divisional playoff round three times and lost all three starts, joining Cowboys great Tony Romo in that club."

According to CBS, Dallas is the lone franchise to have two different quarterbacks start in three divisional round games and not advance to the conference championship.

The streak of 12 playoff runs without making it to the NFL's final four is also a league record. But you know that, too, right?

Well, this is all a deserved critique of Prescott as of the last time we saw him in a game. The veteran finished 23 of 37 with 206 yards, one score and two interceptions against San Francisco in the playoff loss last season.

"The playoff exits have hurt Prescott's legacy to this point, but the Cowboys quarterback has been successful in the regular season with a 61-36 record," CBS Sports noted accurately. "If Prescott can lead Dallas to one deep playoff run, the narrative on the Cowboys' playoff exits will certainly need an alteration."

That would be lovely, and the only bone we have to pick here is that "mirroring'' thing. Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman and their teams earned Super Bowl berths because they were good enough to do so. Romo and Prescott and their teams have fallen short because they weren't good enough. There is nothing mystical about it. There is no other connection.

With Mike McCarthy calling the plays and the "Texas Coast Offense'' in full swing, maybe this year is different. ... and maybe Dak and Dallas can be good enough. Because that's what it takes.
