Cowboys Re-Sign Dalton Schultz? 'Water Under the Bridge' - Insider

Dallas tight end Dalton Schultz remains unsigned in NFL free agency. Is there a Cowboys bargain to be had?

The Dallas Cowboys on Sunday continued their pursuit of win-now deals, acquiring Brandin Cooks in a trade with the Houston Texans. It was a bargain deal that means that in the span of five days, Dallas has filled two of their biggest roster needs with trades, the other get being cornerback Stephon Gilmore from the Colts.

Outside of those big moves the foundational strategy inside The Star has been about focusing on their own before going outside. Could that trend continue heading into the second week of free agency as Cowboys tight end Dalton Schultz has yet to find a new home?

Despite having obvious connections to the Los Angeles Chargers after they hired ex-Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, there is entering Monday no movement there.

The former Stanford product is viewed by many as the best player available, with the current market for a tight end have been established at around $9 million APY. That's a lesser figure than what Schultz originally may have hoped for ($14 million?), and is even cheaper than the $11 million franchise tag he played on last season.

So ... will Dallas make that call?

Cowboys insider Bryan Broaddus, the former Dallas scout now on 105.3 The Fan, suggests the team views the idea as "water under the bridge.'' We're not surprised by that; in the Cowboys' minds, they long ago moved on to the idea of Jake Ferguson and Peyton Hendershot as the tight ends of the future, and more recently have been the subject of buzz regarding using a premium pick in the NFL Draft on a tight end.

But at the rate things are going for Schultz, somebody might end up signing him at a bargain rate - so while we'll assume a reunion is unlikely, we do know how the Cowboys do like their bargains.
