Cowboys Draft RB Deuce Vaughn; Tony Pollard 1-2 Punch?

The Dallas Cowboys added to their running back room in the sixth-round with Deuce Vaughn coming to The Star, and he has the potential to shoot up the depth chart.

The Dallas Cowboys already had a stacked-with-bodies running back room led by Tony Pollard, but they added another one in the sixth round of the NFL Draft.

Kansas State running back Deuce Vaughn is among the latest Cowboys and his last name may be familiar to some. Deuce is the son of Chris Vaughn, who is the assistant director of college scouting with the Cowboys.

But … the Cowboys will argue that if you think this is a sentimental pick, think again.

Vaughn was a star for Kansas State during his college career. In his last two seasons, the running back was a production machine as he totaled 1,404 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns in 2021 and followed that up with 1,558 yards and nine touchdowns in 2022.

That'll work. But what sticks out when looking at Vaughn is that despite his 5-5, 179-pound size, he is a viable duel-threat back. As capable as any running the football, when lined up as a pass catcher, Vaughn and his incredible sidestep make him super slippery in the open field.

Coupled with his low center of gravity, Vaughn (4.4 40) can see a hole and punch through it with devastating effect.

Could he become the backup to Pollard?

There is every chance he could be. With Ronald Jones likely having that job at the time of writing, once OTA's and training camp roll around, Vaughn could quickly thrust himself into the picture

Of course, there are others in Malik Davis and Rico Dowdle who he will have to surpass, but Vaughn's durability, quickness, crisp cuts, and home-run speed give him every chance at making plays for the Cowboys next season.

Of course, there is always “The Zeke Factor.” Owner Jerry Jones said in the wake of this pick that “the ship hasn’t sailed” on the idea of re-signing the two-time rushing champ cut by Dallas this off-season.

But at this moment? The All-American for three straight seasons at Kansas State comes to The Star with a load of potential and every chance of having a productive career for the Cowboys.
