Cowboys VIDEO: Draft Room Tears & Cheers as Scout’s Son - 5-5 RB Deuce Vaughn - Picked

'America's Family?' The Dallas Cowboys draft a team scout's son, running back Deuce Vaughn.

The Dallas Cowboys wanted to use this NFL Draft to add a running back and they just found one in one of their scout’s sons, star Kansas State rusher Deuce Vaughn.

Deuce’s father is Chris Vaughn, the Cowboys’ assistant director of college scouting who has been on the team’s scouting staff since 2017. … and the diminutive Deuce just got picked in the sixth round by a Dallas draft room that broke into tears and cheers upon making the call.

In both the 2021 and 2022 seasons, Deuce received first-team Associated Press All-American honors as an all-purpose player and second-team All-Big 12 Conference accolades as a running back.

During that time, Deuce accounted for 2,962 rushing yards on 5.6 yards per carry and had 846 receiving yards on 91 receptions, combining 3,808 yards from scrimmage and 34 touchdowns.

Leading up to Deuce’s pre-draft interviews, his father gave him a taste of the questions organizations would be asking.

The biggest question mark surrounding the youngest Vaughn is his size; he’s the smallest running back ever measured at the Combine.

Despite testing well athletically at his Pro Day, Deuce’s 5-5, 179-pound frame means he needs to prove he’s capable of playing against larger men in the pros, like his mentor, fellow undersized Kansas State running back Darren Sproles.

Sproles became a star in the NFL, but that began when he accepted a role as a returner and third-down running back, a path Deuce has said he’s willing to embrace as he looks to carve out a pro career predicated on his ability to create space.

ESPN recently interviewed Vaughn, who shared his feelings about potentially being drafted by Dallas.

“It’d almost be like a proud moment to wear the star in there,” Deuce said. “It would be unreal. I’d definitely relish that opportunity.”

“Unreal” just became real. And really emotional.
