The Dallas Cowboys had eight total picks in the 2023 NFL Draft, including two compensatory picks awarded by the NFL. Their first selection came at #26 of the first round. Here are each of the Dallas Cowboys draft picks for the 2023 Draft:

Analysis & Reaction to the Cowboys 2023 NFL Draft

It’s impossible to discuss the Dallas Cowboys draft picks in the 2023 NFL Draft without also mentioning the additional roster moves they made leading up to the draft. Perhaps the most important move to note was the Cowboys’ cutting of long-time RB Ezekiel Elliot. Elliot has been very good for the Cowboys going back to his rookie year, but after a ridiculous number of carries, he has lost a step of the explosiveness that made him special.

Coming into the offseason, the Cowboys had two major needs: another CB to pair with Trevon Diggs and a WR to take some of the pressure off CeeDee Lamb. They managed to accomplish both of these goals before the draft even started, trading for CB Stephon Gilmore and WR Brandin Cooks. As a result of these acquisitions, Dallas was in a much better position on draft day and was able to focus on strengthening other positional groups.

While some have questioned the Cowboys’ first-round selection of Mazi Smith when other top-tier players were still on the board, Dallas was somewhat thin at DT coming into the draft. Smith was exceptional at Michigan and is projected to be a solid-to-great player in the NFL. He will be of above-average size and speed in the NFL and will fit into Dan Quinn’s defensive scheme quite well.

A move that raised significantly fewer eyebrows was the Cowboys’ second-round selection, TE Luke Schoonmaker. Dallas’ starting tight end, Dalton Schultz, will be a Houston Texan in 2023, so they needed to get a starting-caliber tight end in the draft. While many expected Dallas to take Michael Mayer out of Notre Dame in the first round, Schoonmaker was a fine selection after showing his prowess in both the passing game and on the blocking front.

A similar needs-based pick was their third-round selection of DeMarvion Overshown, a safety-converted LB from Texas. With Anthony Barr gone this season, the Cowboys needed an athletic, playmaking linebacker to add depth and possibly make an impact as soon as this season – that’s exactly what they got in Overshown. While many have called this pick a reach, it fits the Cowboys’ needs and may look smart in a few years.

Another excellent selection was the Cowboys’ fourth-round selection of Viliami Fehoko, a run-stopping DT from San Jose State. Though he played for a small school, Fehoko is ranked in the top 99th percentile of run stoppers. He has the ability to step into an important role in his rookie season and – along with Mazi Smith – should serve to strengthen the Cowboys’ defensive front.

Deuce Vaughn’s selection in the sixth round has been called the Cowboys’ best pick. Vaughn is an explosive, elusive RB who is not short on size; he has the ability to break off big plays and will likely be involved in the Cowboys’ offensive gameplan from the jump. Even if he isn’t, he’ll serve as a great depth piece behind Pollard, considering the only other RB on the roster with significant NFL playing time is Ronald Jones.
