Cowboys ‘Intrigue’? On The Dak Prescott & McCarthy ‘Gamble’
FRISCO - Greg Olsen, the former standout NFL tight end now working for Fox Sports, has done a load of Dallas Cowboys telecasts. And is coming away with two notable takes for 2023 …
“Mike McCarthy’s rolling the dice,” Olsen told FanSided of the Dallas coach’s decision to part ways with Kellen Moore and to appoint himself play-caller. “A lot of teams out there would cut their arm off to score 30 points and they go ahead and fire their offensive coordinator.”
Where we will argue with Olsen here - and only minimally - is that McCarthy’s “bet on himself” here is actually a bet on a play-caller with a gigantic edge over Moore in terms of experience.
Combine that with McCarthy’s long-held view that a head coach in charge of play-calling allows him a better and fuller overview of in-game situational football, and …
This might be a “bet.” But it’s not much of a “gamble.”
Olsen adds that “all eyes are on Dak (Prescott),” and this is indisputable … GM, coach and quarterback, that’s how NFL scrutiny works.
Said Olsen: “Can they go from a team that is known for scoring a lot of points, to a team that can win a meaningful game in the playoffs? Can they win a tough game in January? I think that’s what Dak and Mike McCarthy are searching for.”
And one more point from Olsen, though we will strongly suggest that this one has nothing to do with football and everything to do with the marketing of “America’s Team.”
“I think every year Dallas is an intriguing story, maybe no more so than this year.”
Sure, but … are we sure? What makes Dallas more “intriguing” than any of the other 31 teams? Says who? And why?
The best answer we’ve got is about the self-fulfilling prophecy of “perception” and the realities of “supply and demand.” The Cowboys are interesting in part because they are sold that way … and the depth and width and breadth of Cowboys Nation makes for one of the biggest group of “shoppers” on the planet.
