Kelvin Joseph New Position: Saving His Cowboys Career?

Kelvin Joseph's potential third season with the Dallas Cowboys could start at a new spot on both the field and depth chart.

In an ironic twist, a high-profile Dallas Cowboys defender might be changing his position after all.

Whereas Micah Parsons' spot on the roster has a Fort Knox level of security, the same can't be said about 2021 second-round pick Kelvin Joseph. Having dealt with issues both on and off the field, Joseph has struggled to live up to his early-pick billing since arriving as the 44th overall pick out of Kentucky.

With his spot on the roster threatened by several offseason additions, the cornerback may be resorting to one final push to keep a star on his helmet: as the Cowboys reconvened in Frisco for organized team activities, Joseph was seen working with the safeties. ... or, at least, working less as a boundary corner.

Joseph's future was indirectly placed in jeopardy when the Cowboys traded for Stephon Gilmore and enjoyed the rise of depth options like DaRon Bland and Nahshon Wright. Through two seasons he has appeared in 26 games, making only three starts and being involved in just two turnovers (a fumble forcing and recovery each).

The supposed switch to safety could also be a sign that the Cowboys plan to use Joseph in more nickel packages, a role he played well at Scotlandville Magnet High School in Baton Rouge. Joseph's primary duties have come on special teams but he's looking forward to using the OTA sessions to prove his worth at his listed position.

“Having this opportunity to play nickel, it means a lot to me,” Joseph said, per Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News. “It’s a big chance for me and an advantage because of my capabilities and what I’m able to do. I’m just going to show the coach that I’m available, and he can rely on me to play the position whenever he needs me to. … I’m going to take the position that I’m in and make the best of it.”

With Joseph entering the third year of his original rookie contract, the Cowboys would save over $1.5 million upon his potential release.
