Cowboys Projected to Draft Controversial Georgia QB Stetson Bennett

In an all-quarterback mock draft from ESPN, the Cowboys land a two-time national championship winner in Stetson Bennett.

Finding a franchise quarterback in any given draft class is much easier said than done, as there is no guarantee even the first-overall pick will be successful. In the case of the Dallas Cowboys, they hit on their franchise quarterback when they used a fourth-round pick on Dak Prescott in 2016. ... And now we wonder if Dallas could do it again.

Even with Prescott at the helm, quarterback is on the Cowboys to-do list in this week's NFL Draft. In addition to their affection for Tennessee QB Hendon Hooker, who should be selected in the first two days, Dallas has a handful of late-round prospects on the "like'' list.

Those prospects include Max Duggan of TCU, Aidan O'Connell of Purdue and Clayton Tune of Houston.

And for fun, let's add another name as in an ESPN all-quarterback mock draft by Jordan Reid and Matt Miller, Dallas jumps back into the seventh round to take a flier on Georgia's Stetson Bennett with pick No. 250.

"You'll see teams jump around in Round 7 to take a chance on a QB, and we have the Cowboys sending a 2024 sixth-rounder to the Chiefs for the opportunity to take Bennett here," Reid wrote. "He is one of the more intriguing late-round options, and there isn't a more accomplished passer in this year's draft class."

"Intriguing''? There is a lot to like about Bennett, with the quarterback leading Georgia to back-to-back national championships in his two seasons as a starter. In those two championship seasons he threw for 6,990 yards and 56 touchdowns with only 14 interceptions. And hey, this would be a developmental thing, a third-string/practice-squad this, as behind Prescott for Dallas is Cooper Rush, who re-signed this offseason to a two-year contract to remain with the Cowboys. In Prescott's absence last season Rush went 4-1 as the starter, showing that he is more than capable of holding down the backup role and filling in when needed.

But there are some concerns about Bennett's attitude; his "apology'' following an unfortunate public intoxication issue (ironically in Dallas) did not satisfy some critics. Bennett is a proven winner at the college level and may see a team take him with a Day 3 pick. So we'll add him to the "maybe'' group and see if the Cowboys are indeed the "best fit" for him.
