Cowboys Top 10 QBs in NFL Draft Ranked by 3 Scouts; Hooker vs. 'Sleeper'?
FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys are committed to Dak Prescott as their franchise quarterback. But Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has all but promised that his franchise will try to use this NFL Draft to find another QB.
Searching high? The club has looked at Tennessee's Hendon Hooker. .. a player who former NFL GM Mike Tannenbaum thinks will eventually prove to be "the best QB in this year's draft.''
Searching lower? In our colleague John McMullen's terrific study of this year's QB class, he interviews three former NFL scouts to come up with a top 10 list ... and the "searching-lower'' prospects the Cowboys seem to like do not appear.
To wit ...
1. Bryce Young, Alabama
2. C.J. Stroud, Ohio State
3. Anthony Richardson, Florida
4. Will Levis, Kentucky
5. Hendon Hooker, Tennessee
6. Tanner McKee, Stanford
7. Jaren Hall, BYU
8. Aidan O’Connell, Purdue
9. Jake Haener, Fresno State
10. Stetson Bennett, Georgia
Hooker's placement makes sense to us. But it is the absence of two names that we find notable. The Cowboys have connected with three QBs in their pre-Draft visits (in one form or another): Max Duggan of TCU, Aidan O'Connell of Purdue and Clayton Tune of Houston.
And as you can see, only one of them make our scouts' list.
Let's cross-check with Dane Brugler ... and he's got O'Connell as the No. 7 QB (and fourth-round-worthy), Tune as the No. 10 QB (fifth or sixth) and Duggan at No. 13 (six or seven).
That's a little more comforting.
There are some other names our scouts want you to know, like "sleeper'' Tyson Bagent of Sheppard (Brugler thinks he's a seventh-rounder) and Jake Haener of Fresno State (our scouts think he's "a Taylor Heinicke type.'')
And we'll note one more guy: UCLA's Dorian Thompson-Robinson, a Day 3 pick who seems to be a riser.
Somewhere in here, by Round 7, the Cowboys will probably have nabbed a guy. And if we combine the thoughts of the Cowboys with Brugler's notes and with our three-scouts survey? Aidan O’Connell of Purdue early on Day 3 looks like the pick.
