Cowboys ‘Surprise’ WR Ready to Help Dak Prescott?

The Dallas Cowboys have a loaded wide receiving corps with CeeDee Lamb and Michael Gallup, but a new star may be in the making.

The Dallas Cowboys receiver corps is anchored by young star CeeDee Lamb, and with the tandem of Brandin Cooks and Michael Gallup, it adds up to a solid - and maybe stellar - room.

But FanSided has labeled another Cowboys rising star heading into training camp: second-year receiver Jalen Tolbert.

"Tolbert has a different pep in his step and Mike McCarthy coined him (and Sam Williams) as great examples of players who are making a second-year leap. Tolbert's practices are indicative of that," the outlet said.

None of this is new to CowboysSI.com readers. We’ve seen Tolbert work and we’ve spoken to him. Our Mike Fisher labels him as “earnest” in his desire to improve from a rookie season that was lacking.

But national media outlets catching the drift? Good for Tolbert …

Tolbert had a disappointing rookie season in 2022. The South Alabama product caught just two balls for a total of 12 yards, while playing in just eight games.

His struggles were contributed to by an unfortunate injury early in his offseason with Dallas. A hamstring issue kept Tolbert out most of the spring.

But this summer has been different. Tolbert has looked the part over the course of the last month of work.

"[Tolbert] caught multiple touchdowns in 7-on-7 work both at OTAs and mandatory minicamp. He's looked comfortable in multiple roles and his route-running as taken a huge turn, per team reporters," Fansided concluded.

The 6-3, 190-pound Tolbert was a monster in college, logging 3,140 yards and 22 touchdowns on 178 receptions in his career. This led to him being drafted 88th overall by Dallas in 2022.

If he rises to the occasion in his sophomore campaign and delivers as some reporters expect - and as CowboysSI.com reporters have seen him do in person - he could find himself as Dak Prescott's fourth option in 2023.
