How Stephon Gilmore Trade Could 'Shape' Cowboys Season

After being traded for by the Dallas Cowboys, Stephon Gilmore is named an under-the-radar player who could have a major impact this season.

OXNARD, Calif. - It has been a productive offseason so far for the Dallas Cowboys. Addressing two key areas via trade, they traded for receiver Brandin Cooks from the Houston Texans to pair with CeeDee Lamb and cornerback Stephon Gilmore from the Indianapolis Colts to partner with Trevon Diggs.

The latter of those moves bolstered an already elite defense, and as training camp gets ready to roll here in Oxnard, we think those two players have the ability to “re-shape” Dallas’ look at feel on both sides of the ball.

That is not a unique view. But here is one: Gilmore is named an “under-the-radar player” by CBS Sports.

"The Cowboys' offseason was relatively quiet, with a pair of trades for veterans -- Gilmore and Brandin Cooks -- as the most significant moves," CBS Sports writes. "With Trevon Diggs as the top corner, Gilmore should have some easier assignments and more chances for big plays."

Yes, we’ve got some bones to pick here. One, we are not sure on what football planet two trades for “name players” constitutes a “quiet” offseason. And two …  An NFL Defensive Player of the Year winner is coming to Oxnard and then Dallas “under the radar”? How so?

Gilmore enters this season four years removed from that Defensive Player of the Year season in 2019, when he anchored the New England Patriots secondary. That season saw him record 53 tackles as well as six interceptions, two which were returned for a touchdown.

While the veteran cornerback may not be the same player he was in 2019, he still can be a productive addition for the Cowboys. He is coming off a strong season with the Colts in 2022, snagging two interceptions and 11 passes defended while recording a career-high 66 tackles.

Pair Gilmore with Diggs, who recorded a combined 14 interceptions, 35 passes defended 111 tackles in the last two seasons, and the Cowboys have a cornerback duo that has an argument for the best in the NFL.

Even if Gilmore isn't a DPOY-caliber player anymore, his acquisition should pay dividends for the Cowboys - and could be the piece that pushes them over the hump in their hunt for a Super Bowl win. If that happens? We suppose the “quiet” will get loud and the “radar” will be made aware.
