Cowboys Trevon Diggs & Stephon Gilmore: NFL's Best CB Duo?

Do the Dallas Cowboys have the top cornerback duo in the NFL with Trevon Diggs and Stephon Gilmore?

The Dallas Cowboys added former Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore in an offseason trade with the Indianapolis Colts, creating one of the top cornerback duos in the NFL with Trevon Diggs

However, it's not the best cornerback duo in the NFL, according to a new countdown. In fact, it may only be the second-best pairing of corners in the NFC East.

NFL Media's Bucky Brooks recently ranked the top cornerback duos in the NFL, and the Cowboys came in at No. 3, a sign that the addition of Gilmore should bolster the secondary that defensive coordinator Dan Quinn will have to work with. As the Cowboys try to leapfrog the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC East, it behooves them to have multiple top-tier cornerbacks, given that in head-to-head matchups they'll be asked to defend two excellent receivers in A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith.

Of course, the Eagles will be asked to do the same thing against the Cowboys, who now have a strong duo at receiver themselves with CeeDee Lamb and Brandin Cooks. And as such, the Eagles found a way to retain veteran cornerbacks Darius Slay and James Bradberry this offseason. Brooks ranked Philadelphia's cornerback duo as the second-best that the league has to offer, slightly ahead of the Cowboys.

Still, it's a nice ranking for the Cowboys. The only concerning part is that both Diggs and Gilmore can become free agents after the 2023 season. Gilmore is also entering his age-33 season, so it's unclear how long this duo will be together.

The top-ranked cornerback duo in the NFL, per Brooks, is employed by the New York Jets. Not only was Sauce Gardner the Defensive Rookie of the Year Award winner in 2022, but he was a First-Team All-Pro selection, a pretty rare accomplishment for a player in their first NFL season. Sixth-year veteran D.J. Reed is paired with Gardner, as he enters the second season of a three-year, $33 million free-agent contract. The Jets will need a strong cornerback duo to compete in a division that includes receivers such as Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle and Stefon Diggs.
