Cowboys Ex DeMarco Murray: Cautionary Tale For Ezekiel Elliott Signing?

Ezekiel Elliott and the Dallas Cowboys parted ways after they couldn't come to terms on a restructured deal, but could Elliott be about to find that moving on can be harder than it looks?

Ezekiel Elliott has moved on after seven years of great service to the Dallas Cowboys organization, a cap casualty that now leaves him in job-search mode.

The rumors that the running back could see an opportunity to play for the Cowboys NFC East rivals in the Philadelphia Eagles have raised the collective eyebrow. (And yes, Adam Schefter's sloppiness here reduces his "report'' down to "rumor''-level.)

But is DeMarco Murray a cautionary tale of what can happen when chasing greener pastures? And whether it's Philly green or another city and color, could Elliott meet a similar fate?

In Murray's first game against Dallas in 2015, the defending NFL rushing champion was held to just two yards on 13 attempts. In the next meeting, Murray totaled 83 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries before being shipped off to Tennessee. ... after which he soon retired.

Murray in Philly. Emmitt Smith in Arizona. Tony Dorsett in Denver.

Same stuff.

The Eagles aren't likely to chase the two-time NFL rushing champion as they have just signed Rashaad Penny from the Seattle Seahawks. But in the unlikely event that Zeke does make the switch (a source has stated that Elliott wants to play against the Cowboys in 2023) to the Eagles, it would signal a rather interesting "business decision" from Zeke.

The relationship built between Elliott and the Cowboys organization since he was drafted in 2016 has always been strong. But as Murray found out in 2015, the grass isn't always greener swapping Dallas for Philadelphia, or any other team for that matter.

These are just rumors at this point, and other teams like the Cincinnati Bengals and the New York Jets have seen their names be thrust into the ring along with the Eagles ... although a pair of Jets running backs are against the idea already

Financially and otherwise, Elliott is about to find himself in a vastly different environment than he is used to ... and that doesn't always translate to on-field success.
