OXNARD, Calif. - Speaking statistically, it’s really not as “bold” as people think. And speaking statistically, it’s really not an out-on-a-limb guarantee, either.

"I am going to lessen my interception numbers," Dak Prescott told us from Dallas Cowboys training camp here in Oxnard. “That is a guarantee."

Much will be made of this remark because, well, it’s the Cowboys and it’s Dak and his 15 interceptions in 2022 did lead the NFL in this most unfortunate category.

But we have detailed - as has none other than Cowboys legend Troy Aikman in our 1-on-1 visit - how fluky some of those turnovers were. Additionally, we have documented how “recency bias” has created the goofball myth that turnovers are in “Dak’s DNA,” when in reality the facts scream the opposite.

Prescott before last year averaged about eight picks per season. Even with the 15 in 2022, he now averages nine per season. So thinking logically … of course the odds are he will have fewer than 15. … because history tells us that the odds are literally that he’ll have nine.

This dopey anti-Dak stuff got new legs recently when a local paper erroneously reported that Prescott said he "would not have 10 interceptions" this coming season. That created yet another layer of gunk on the QB’s true accomplishments, because he was misquoted and was actually referring to “tipped” interceptions,

Not “10.” “Tipped.” (by the way this is Cowboys organizational conspiratorial claim; there were five media outlets present when Prescott said “tipped.” CowboysSI.com was one of the five.)

Prescott is making it clear on that he intends to lower his interception total in 2023. There’s nothing “bold” about that.

Prescott additionally said he's "not going to stop being aggressive," and that is where the balance comes into play, not just for this QB but for all of them. Indeed, every player who is put in a decision-making spot must measure risk vs. reward in his actions,

Interceptions were never a Prescott talking point until last season. It is right that the subject is a talking point now.

How does Dak Prescott change the narrative? Simply be reaching his very achievable - and not very “bold” - guarantee.
