Trade Tyron Smith? How Cowboys OTAs Lineup Reveals Plan

The Dallas Cowboys will someday be moving on from one of the team’s legends. But this idea of trading Tyron Smith now is nonsense.

FRISCO - Someday, the Dallas Cowboys will be moving on from one of the team’s legends. ... and whether the low-key Tyron Smith likes it or not - and he won't like it - there will be mountains of attention paid to the move, including a goodbye press conference overflowing with emotion.

But this idea of moving on from Tyron Smith now, as floated by Bleacher Report''? B/R's "shocking trade ideas” piece is, in this particular case, far more "silly'' than "shocking.'' And from inside The Star, here are the five reasons why ...

1- COWBOYS AS CONTENDERS - Keeping it very simple: This 2023 team thinks it can compete for a Super Bowl. There will be no “giveaways” or “give-ups” on established players who can help push Dallas..

2- TALENT, ALBEIT FADING - BUT EXPIRING - Smith, the eight-time Pro Bowler, restructured his deal down to an amazingly team-friendly $3 million salary in 2023. And then his contract is done. … making that the appropriate time for moving on.

3- HE’S A STARTER! - This is very much what we witnessed as we watched Dallas’ OTA work here at The Star on Thursday.

Terence Steele isn’t healthy enough to practice yet. And Zack Martin took most of most of the day.

So Dallas lined up thusly: LT-Tyler Smith, LG-Matt Farniok, C-Tyler Biadasz, RG-Josh Ball and RT-Tyron Smith.

Maybe Tyron stays at right tackle instead of his usual spot. But with all due respect to Farniok and Ball (and other guys who rotated in) … you really think that group gets better by subtracting Tyron?

4- JONES EMOTION - Yes, this is a business. But owner Jerry Jones will ultimately want to “do right” by a man in Smith who is both an all-time stud and a sort of “adopted” member of the Jones family. Saying goodbye to Jones faves like DeMarcus Ware, Tony Romo, Dez Bryant and Jason Witten made for very personal issues for Jones.

Tyron will be in that category. … when the time is right. This is not that time.

5- TYRON WOULD QUIT? - It has long been rumored that Tyron would, if on the verge of being traded, would make it clear that he would essentially “veto” the trade by informing his new potential employer that he’ll simply retire.

That’s not so much a “power play” as it is a simple matter of “comfortability”; he wants to be in Dallas. He could in theory change his mind. But we believe that’s his stance.

And just as Item No. 3 tells a story that you have to see the OTA alignment to understand, that Item No. 5 tells you about what Tyron’s all about. He will give Dallas all he’s got …and Dallas is going to need that.
