Eli Manning Reflects on Daniel Jones's Tenure

A lot has gone wrong with Daniel Jones's time as the Giants franchise quarterback, but former franchise quarterback Eli Manning also notes that there have been some good things to come from Jones.

There is a growing sentiment that the New York Giants will move off of quarterback Daniel Jones next year if the Giants end up in a position to pick a top quarterback in the draft.

Jones, to his credit, has tried to do everything possible to fill the big shoes left behind when Eli Manning retired. Unfortunately, a growing injury history and some unfavorable circumstances might make it hard for the Giants to justify giving Jones one more year as their starter, especially if they draft a quarterback.

Speaking of Manning, I asked him on the new Locked On Giants podcast, on which he was also promoting Quaker Oats' "Pregrain" Stadium tour, what he felt had gone right and what had gone wrong with Jones's tenure. Here's what he had to say.

I think Daniel's done a good job every year of understanding the adjustments he needs to make in his game to get better. He had the turnover situations early on, and he's fixed those. And last year, he put it all together.

It's been difficult every year, almost as a new offensive coordinator, a new system, or new players coming in and out. And so that's not easy for a young quarterback to keep making those adjustments. And I think now, 'Hey, we're going to have this staff, we're going to have this team for a while.'

Unfortunately, Daniel had to deal with the injuries this year, and that's just a part of football and an unfortunate part of it. He had the neck or the Stingers going on for a while, then dealing with the knee injury, going on IR, and having surgery. So it's been a tough run this year with everything going on. ...

I think Daniel's got the talent, the leadership skills, the drive. He wants to do things. So, I expect him to rehab, work hard, and come back ready for next year.
