Giants Saquon Barkley Avoids High Ankle Sprain, but Will Still Miss Time

Barkley was injured toward the end of Sunday's 31-28 win over the Arizona Cardinals.

New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley will miss three weeks after suffering an ankle injury in the team's 31-28 win over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.

According to ESPN, the injury is an ordinary ankle sprain, not the dreaded high ankle variety.

Barkley suffered the injury with just over a minute left in the game when his foot got stuck underneath him in the bottom of a pile, and he turned awkwardly following a rush attempt up the middle. He had to be helped off the field and didn't appear to be able to put weight on his right leg.

X-rays on his swollen right ankle were negative, but he was to have an MRI on Monday to determine the severity of his injury. Remember, Barkley missed four games with a high ankle sprain two years ago against the Dallas Cowboys when he stepped on a defender's foot.

Barkley is playing this season on a modified franchise tag that will pay him $11 million and has incentives tied into the team making the playoffs.

In two games this year, he has 114 yards on 29 carries and one rushing touchdown. Ninety-five of his yards have come after contact, and he's forced five missed tackles, all coming in Week 2 versus the Cardinals.

Barkley gets a bit of a break with the timing, as the Giants will have 11 days between their Thursday night game with the 49ers this week and their Monday night home game against the Seahawks on October 2.

If all goes well with his rehab, Barkley could be looking at returning for the team's road game against the Bills on October 15.
