Giants Have "Real Concerns" About Daniel Jones's Durability, Claims Report

The New York Giants are reportedly concerned about quarterback Daniel Jones's inability to stay healthy. They've kept all options on the table at the quarterback position.

The New York Giants decided to pay quarterback Daniel Jones handsomely last offseason after he led the team to the playoffs the season before. Then, their offense crumbled around the veteran quarterback, who struggled during the season's first six games before tearing his ACL.

As a result of that injury, plus the fact that Jones suffered his second neck injury in three years prior to the torn ACL, Judy Battista of the NFL Network thinks there is some concern on the Giants' behalf regarding Jones's durability.

"This is a moment where the Giants have to consider their big-picture plans at quarterback because not only did Daniel Jones not play well when he played last year, but there are real concerns about his durability," Battista said. "He's coming off the ACL right now. He's had two neck injuries, so you have to worry about Daniel Jones's health."

Giants general manager Joe Schoen signed veteran Drew Lock in free agency to replace Tyrod Taylor, last year's backup who signed with the cross-town rival Jets.

The Giants also have Tommy DeVito under contract, but Battista doesn't believe the second-year quarterback is "really enough insurance" if Jones isn't ready to start the season.

Beyond that, though, Battista agrees that the Giants are at a crossroads with the quarterback position.

"Will they draft a quarterback? Don't forget Daniel Jones's contract is structured so the Giants can get out of it after the 2024 season. So they're going to have a decision to make at quarterback after this season anyway," Battista said.

"You hope you're not drafting as high as number six very often. And this is a class that is perceived to be deep at quarterback, although we've certainly looked at previous quarterback classes that we thought were deep, and it didn't pan out."

Schoen has said that Jones is expected to return as the starter once he's healthy. The Giants' general manager has already taken steps to upgrade the offensive line by adding guard Jon Runyan and guard/tackle Jermaine Eluemunor in free agency.

The Giants could still draft a quarterback in next month's draft and are strongly projected to do so. Whether that candidate will be a Day 1 prospect or someone they grab later in the draft will tell us how the front office and coaching staff really view the future of the position.
