New York Giants Bonus Reader Mailbag

Some late-arriving letters make it into a bonus edition of our mailbag.

If you'd like to submit a question for the mailbag, please send it to nygiantsmaven@gmail.com. We reserve the right to edit letters for clarity and conciseness. While we try to answer all questions received, we reserve to consolidate if several people ask the same question.

I gave this one some thought, Michael, and my initial thought was if they were waiting to see how he recovers from the neck ailment that bothered him through the second part of the year. This isn't just a matter of restructuring a contract to clear out money. An extension is involved since Williams is in the final year of his deal, and contracts can take time to come together.

What's up, PJ? Those with whom I've spoken in the scouting community say this is a deep class for corners, running backs, interior defensive linemen, and tight ends.

As any scout or general manager will tell you, if you do your homework, you WILL find talent, even if the talent pool at a particular position isn't great.

What's good, Blue? Last year, just about every draft pick the Giants made had been one of the allotted 30 visits. I look at the visits as part of the overall job interview. People submit their "resumes" and those who look like they're a fit draw initial interest.

Then the more it seems like a specific prospect is a fit, the team will do additional work--visit with them on pro days, do more background checking, and then have them in for a visit at the facility--before assigning them a draft grade. Make sense?

Too soon to say right now, Rob. Over the Cap does a great job of tracking this stuff, and right now, they have the Giants as having lost more eligible free agents than they gained. But again, it's too soon to say for sure, as the more activity the team does, the more likely things will cancel out.

Frank, I highly respect Julian Love and what he brought to the team, but if you recall, I've been predicting that he'd be moving on for weeks. The Giants have some good young talent at safety in Jason Pinnock and Dane Belton and Trenton Thompson.

Receiver, on the other hand--well, how often did everyone gripe about the receiver corps last year versus the safeties? That being said, you're talking about two different positions, one of which has depth and the other which does not.

Adam, I know this isn't going to be a popular opinion, but I think it's time to move on from a Giants-OBJ reunion. Right now, this team desperately needs interior offensive linemen more than they do a receiver.

Joe Schoen told everyone at his year-end press conference that there were a lot of No. 1 receivers who ended up sitting at home during the playoffs. That should have been our first clue into what Schoen's thought process for this year

That said, the Giants owed it to themselves to do due diligence on Beckham. But my guess is unless he's willing to play for a lot less than what he probably wants, he's not coming here.

What's up, Ben? The cornerback class in this year's draft is widely regarded as the deepest in years. I won't be stunned if the Giants double-dip into that talent pool.

As for Julian Love, I believe they think they have talent in the building to replace him. Plus, as I also said previously, they need to look at adding on the interior offensive line, so perhaps they figured they'd use that savings from Love to address center, of which right now they only have one guy (I believe) with experience to play the position (Ben Bredeson).

Hey Marcelo! Thanks so much for the question! Yes, I do get the sense that another edge rusher is in the cards, even with the return of Jihad Ward.

I don't think they'll add to that spot in the first two rounds, but I could see maybe a Day 3 prospect or an undrafted free agent just to add some depth.

Right now, as you know, Oshane Ximines is unsigned. I don't think they know what they have in Elerson Smith, who has dealt with injuries two years in a row. So yeah, I think edge rusher is a sneaky need.

I don't think any general manager will ever say he's finished building a roster. I'm sure you saw the report that A'Shawn Robinson is coming in for a visit on Monday, right?

Right now, as far as cap space goes--and again, I'll remind everyone that cap space is fluid this time of year--the Giants have $879,048 of effective cap space, so I would think some sort of move is coming to clear out more.

Will it be from a Leo extension? A Dexter extension? Will Schoen have to touch Adoree' Jackson's contract? These are all possibilities. It would also help if they could get something done with Saquon.

Hi Jon. As noted above, the team has Dane Belton, Jason Pinnock, and Trenton Thompson on the roster to accompany Xavier McKinney at safety. I also wouldn't be shocked if they added a low-cost veteran and/or a young prospect.

Between the two, Derek, I'd lean toward cornerback. But I also wouldn't rule out center right now, either.

Great handle, Dogs! I can't wait till I find my next one to spoil. I haven't heard if the Giants are kicking the tires on McKenzie just yet. That said, at what point do they turn their attention to the interior offensive line, which in my eyes, is a bigger need?

Jlats, I've said it before and will say it again. My fondest wish for this team is they find a good young center in this draft that can grow old with the other youngsters on the line (Thomas, Neal, Ezeudue, etc.)

(From Chris D.) Patti, your key slogan for your intro should be " Your Locked in with the Traina, and you're locked on Giants, so let's go." Do you trade down for Joey Porter in the 1st round? I believe we will be drafting 2 CB this year. And do you like Rice as WR in 2nd or 3 rd if he is there?

What's up, Chris? Thanks for the slogan suggestion. As for your football question, I don't think the Giants trade down in the first round. Could they trade out of it? Yes. But I don't think they will move down in that round. As for the second round, I'm sticking with CB and OL in some order as my first two picks.

(From Michael A.) Do you think the Giants may address the receiver position twice in this draft? Like Joshua Downs on the second and maybe a guy like Jonathan Mingo or Mims, who’s projected to go later in the draft?

Never say never, Micahel, but right now, if I'm the Giants, I would double dip at the cornerback position given the additions they've made in free agency at receiver.

(From Jerry W.) The Waller restructure spreads 9M over 4 years and creates $7M space this yr. But Golladay's post-6/1 release had $12M space this year and pushed off about $4M to next year. Schoen says a week ago he wanted to take his medicine now to keep the future clear AND THEN a week later does the exact opposite?

Furthermore, if Waller crashes and burns, then the $6+M in bonus hits all next year. Why take this approach if you need space to do more FA purchases this year? Does he need that money right now and couldn’t afford to wait until 6/1 for the added $12M?

What's good, Jerry? Yu sort of answered your own question. Yes, Schoen needed the money now, hence the Waller restructure. I suspect, though, had they been able to get something done with Leonard Williams and Saquon Barkley, maybe he could have waited on re-doing Waller, but that wasn't in the cards.
