Lucky 17: Is Giants First Pick on NFL Draft 1st-Round Invite List?

The odds makers don't think so, and we agree.

Seventeen potential first-round draft picks will be present at the NFL Draft in Kansas City starting April 27. And is the New York Giants' next first-round selection among them?

Before we answer that question, here is the list recently released by the NFL:

  • WR Jordan Addison, USC
  • EDGE Will Anderson, Alabama
  • DB Brian Branch, Alabama
  • DT Jalen Carter, Georgia
  • WR Zay Flowers, Boston College
  • CB Christian Gonzalez, Oregon
  • OL Paris Johnson, Ohio State
  • QB Will Levis, Kentucky
  • CB Joey Porter, Penn State
  • QB Anthony Richardson, Florida
  • RB Bijan Robinson, Texas
  • WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Ohio State
  • QB C.J. Stroud, Ohio State
  • EDGE Keion White, Georgia Tech
  • EDGE Tyree Wilson, Texas Tech
  • CB Devon Witherspoon, Illinois
  • QB Bryce Young, Alabama

On this list, receivers Addison, Flowers, and Smith-Njigba have been mocked to the Giants at No. 25 during mock draft season at one point or another. But as we draw closer to the draft, there is a growing feeling that perhaps none of those players will make it to the Giants when they go on the clock.

FanDuel has Smith-Njigba as having the best odds to be the first receiver selected in the draft, followed by Flowers and Addison in that order. But NFL.com's Peter Schrager, in his latest mock draft, believes that Flowers could fall to the Giants at No. 25.

What about the cornerbacks, a position we feel is a greater need for the Giants? Well, the chances of Gonzalez, Porter, and Witherspoon making it to No. 25 aren't very good either, according to the odds.

How tricky is it to pin down the Giant's pick? So tricky that over at CBS Sports, six different writers all have different picks for the Giants at No. 25.

And to think, we haven't even discussed the possibility of the Giants trading out of that 25th spot which would further cloud what they may or may not do.

But we digress here. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter if the first pick the Giants make gets some television face time once his name is called.

What does matter is that the pick made by general manager Joe Schoen and company is a good fit for what the coaches are looking for and a guy who can come into East Rutherford and be a Day 1 starter and impact player.
