New York Giants Draft Prospect Profile: CB Tyrique Stevenson

Tyrique Stevenson is another intriguing cornerback candidate in an extremely deep pool that could boost the Giants depth at the position.

Tyrique Stevenson, CB

Height: 6’0
Weight: 198 lbs.
Class: Senior
School: Miami (FL)

Tyrique Stevenson was the third-ranked cornerback in the country out of Miami Southridge High School in Homestead, Florida, from the 2019 recruiting class. Stevenson committed to the Georgia Bulldogs over Auburn, Florida, Miami, and Alabama.

Notables

Stevenson was an immediate contributor on the Georgia Bulldogs' defense as a true freshman but was playing the STAR position, common in SEC football for a safety/cornerback/light linebacker hybrid.

Following his sophomore season and first year as a starter, Stevenson decided to transfer out of the program because he wanted to be used more as an outside cornerback instead of playing STAR.

Strengths

  • 6’0 and a solid 198 pounds
  • 32 ⅝” arms put him in the 87th percentile for cornerbacks in NFL Combine history
  • Not a pick artist but does a good job of disrupting catches
  • Keeps his eyes on the hips and does a good job of timing his punch in press
  • Athletic profile to be a quality starter on the outside
  • Smooth footwork technique
  • If he does get beat, has the athleticism to get himself back into the play
  • Physical as a tackler
  • Coming into the NFL with considerable experience in both the SEC and ACC

Weaknesses

  • Has consistently struggled in zone coverage and off-man - should play in a press-man heavy defense
  • Stiff hips in transition, leading him to occasionally lag behind in off coverage
  • Doesn’t wrap up with any sort of consistency
  • Poor angles as a tackler plague him
  • Can either keep his eyes in the backfield in zone or know where his responsibilities are but struggles to do both at the same time

Summary

Stevenson’s about as good a scheme fit as it gets for the Giants regarding cornerback in the 2023 NFL Draft. Length, athleticism, and scheme fit leave this match made in heaven.

Stevenson's experience in multiple schemes helps, should Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale leave the team.
