New York Giants Draft Prospect Profile: TE Will Mallory

Might the Giants be looking to add to the tight end room? If so, what does Will Mallory bring to the mix?

Will Mallory, TE

Height: 6-foot-5
Weight: 239 lbs.
Class: Fifth-Year Senior
School: Miami

Will Mallory was the eighth-ranked tight end in the 2018 recruiting class from Jacksonville, Florida. Mallory was a “spotty” recruit that wasn’t highly sought after but had interest from major programs and ultimately chose the Miami Hurricanes over Alabama, Michigan, and Boston College.

Notables

Mallory is one of the most experienced tight ends in the 2023 NFL Draft, with 2,555 offensive snaps on his resume. Mallory had three head coaches and four offensive coordinators in five seasons in Miami, leading to no consistency in leadership or system.

Strengths

  • Has the versatility to do just about anything a team will ask of him
  • Struggled with drops early in his career but has become a reliable safety valve
  • Reached a top speed of 18.92 MPH at the Senior Bowl
  • Does a good job of creating yards after the catch by pure effort
  • Not the quickest accelerator, but if he gets moving can eat up space
  • Smooth hips as a route runner
  • Does a good job with route tempo variation
  • Consistently finds his target as a blocker

Weaknesses

  • Will be 24 years old as a rookie
  • Will likely need to add some muscle to improve his blocking
  • Blocking technique is a struggle for him
  • Doesn’t sit in the soft spot of a defense
  • Struggles to make catches through contact consistently
  • Being used as a vertical threat would not be his strong suit
  • Physical coverage will throw him off track easily
  • In a weird spot as a tweener, not athletic enough to be a pass-catching specialist but not strong enough to be a pure in-line option

Summary

Mallory is an unspectacular option but given that he would likely be asked to be a low-end second tight end or a quality third tight end, taking a flier on him late in the draft is a low-risk move. With a style that could be complementary to Daniel Bellinger and allow more schematic versatility for Daboll and Kafka to operate with multiple tight end sets.
