Giants QB Daniel Jones Cleared for Contact

The Giants quarterback is on track to return for the Giants' Week 9 game against the Raiders.

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones has been cleared for contact and is on track to play next weekend when the team visits the Las Vegas Raiders in the first of a three-game road swing.

Jones, injured in Week 5 against the Miami Dolphins when linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel sacked him, had missed the last three games while working through his injury.

While he and the team kept most of the details of the injury under wraps, Jones did eventually admit that the injury was creating issues on the left side of his neck and down his arm that were part of the reason why doctors withheld the green light to clear him.

But Jones, who in the off-season signed a four-year, $160 million contract, was always confident he'd be able to return at some point this year. As of last Wednesday, he reported that he still had some lingering symptoms and that he needed to pass a couple more tests, but he's since done all that to receive clearance.

Jones's clearance, which, according to the New York Post, came Sunday morning before backup Tyrod Taylor suffered a rib cage injury that required him to spend a night at a local hospital, is timely. Taylor's availability for future games wasn't known, but it's probably not a stretch to believe that Tayor will miss some time with his injury.

The Giants could end up placing Taylor on IR and sign Tommy DeVito, who yesterday was on his third and final standard practice squad elevation, to the roster to replace him, or they could add a veteran such as Matt Barkley or Ian Book, both of whom they worked out a couple of weeks ago, to the roster.

The Giants, who per Over the Cap have $508,243 in cap space remaining, are expected to make some roster moves before the October 31 trade deadline to clear some additional cap space to get them through the rest of the year.
