New York Giants Work Out Two Quarterbacks

No signings yet as New York is waiting to see where Daniel Jones is with his rehab.

The New York Giants are leaving nothing to chance regarding the quarterback position, where starter Daniel Jones continues his rehab from a neck injury suffered two weeks ago.

To that end, the team worked out a pair of veteran signal callers on Monday, Matt Barkley and Ian Book, and receiver Damiere Byrd.

Barkley was originally drafted out of USC in the fourth round by the Eagles in 2013. He spent three seasons with the Buffalo Bills (2018-2020), whose offensive coordinator at the time was current Giants head coach Brian Daboll.

Barkley, who also spent seasons with the Cardinals, Bears, Bengals, Panthers, and Falcons, has played in 19 career games with seven starts. He's completed 212 out of 363 pass attempts (58.4 percent) for 2,699 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 22 interceptions.

Barkley was on the Bills practice squad last year but was waived/injured at the end of the preseason.

Book was also a fourth-round draft pick, selected in 2021 by the Saints. He's also made stops with the Eagles and was most recently with the Patriots practice squad. Book has appeared in one carer game, with the Saints as a rookie, having gone 12 of 20 for 135 yards and two interceptions.

The Giants are waiting to see how far along Jones is in rehab for his neck injury. On Sunday night, NBC sideline reporter Melissa Stark revealed that Jones shared new details about his neck injury that included symptoms in his left (non-throwing) shoulder that were concerning enough to where the team wanted to be extra cautious with him regarding taking any hits before the injury is better.

This is the second neck injury for Jones, who missed the final six games of the season in 2021 with what he said was a different kind of injury. With that one, however, Jones could practice, something he hasn't been able to do just yet with this latest injury.

The Giants currently have veteran Tyrod Taylor filling in for Jones while he heals up and rookie Tomy DeVito, whom they elevated off their practice squad for their Week 6 game against the Bills.

Daboll told reporters last week that the team hadn't ruled out adding another veteran quarterback if it looked like Jones, who also told Stark his goal is to be ready to play this coming weekend when the Giants host the Washington Commanders, might be a while before returning.

Byrd, 5-foot-9 and 175-pound Byrd is a seven-year veteran whose career stops include the Panthers, Patriots, Cardinals, Bears, and Falcons. He has 130 career receptions for 1,689 yards and seven touchdowns and has experience as a kickoff and punt returner.
