Report: Giants Defensive Coordinator Wink Martindale Resigns Post

The split had been rumored to be in the works for weeks amid reports of friction between the two men.

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll continued his shake-up of his coaching staff Monday, the latest move being a big one.

According to an NFL Network report, defensive coordinator Wink Martindale has resigned from his post. The news comes just moments after word of Kevin and Drew Wilkins, a defensive assistant and outside linebackers coach who are two of Martindale's top assistants whom he brought over from Baltimore, were relieved of their duties.

The news of Martindale's departure comes as little surprise. Several weeks ago, FOX Sports NFL insider Jay Glazer reported that the working relationship between Daboll and Martindale had deteriorated to the point where a parting of ways was likely imminent.

The relationship survived the bye week and the rest of the season as both men tried to downplay any friction. But whispers continued to swirl that a split was imminent, and when the Wilkins brothers were relieved of their duties, MArtindale's departure seemed like a done deal.

Daboll, meanwhile, will now need two new coordinators after firing special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey. He'll also need a new offensive line coach after firing Bobby Johnson. He will also need to replace running backs coach Jeff Nixon, who is headed to Syracuse as their offensive coordinator, and strength and conditioning coach Craig Fitzgerald, who took a similar post with Florida.
