New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones knew working with the team on his first major contract extension wouldn't be difficult.

"Yeah, it's my first time going through it. There's an emotional component to it, you know, as well," Jones said during a video conference call with reporters one day after inking a four-year, $160 million contract extension.

"But it was good. I think there were probably some points where you had more confidence and some points in time where you had less confidence. But I wanted to find a way to work it out, and that was the goal. It was very much my mindset, and I’m glad we did. I’m thrilled to be back."

General manager Joe Schoen did his best to remain as transparent with the fifth-year quarterback as possible, telling him to take emotion out of the picture.

Jones also received some advice from retired quarterback Eli Manning, who went through several contract negotiations in his day.

"Yeah, I spoke to Eli before the process started and a little bit during, and he gave me some good advice," Jones said. "I think his message was just that they’ll work out how they’re supposed to. One day, you’re going to feel good about it. One day, not as good. But just to keep working."

Jones, who said that some of the numbers reported in the days leading up to his contract getting done weren't all true, said he tried to be fair with his contract requests so that the team wouldn't be hamstrung when it came to addressing other needs.

"In a situation like this, you’re trying to do what’s best for you and your family while also balancing being part of a team and understanding the goals and vision that we have as a team and as an organization," Jones said.

"That was certainly important to me throughout the deal. And I think we found a way to do both those things and to do it the right way for both sides."
