Giants, Jets Currently Battling It Out for No. 1 Pick in 2021 Draft

There's still a lot of football left to be played, but if that football doesn't result in wins, at least Giants fans will have something to look forward to.

The Giants and Jets might not be doing much int he way of winning on the field so far this season, but off the field, they have quite the battle going for the first overall pick in next year's draft.

Along with the Atlanta Falcons, the two New York teams remain the only ones in the league who have failed to record a win.

Despite the tie in the record, the Falcons' strength of schedule based on games played so far (.750), whereas the Giants and Jets have the weakest.

So that would mean that if the season were to end today and the draft order was to be determined, the Giants would hold the second overall pick in the draft.

Unfortunately, the Giants are no stranger to having a high draft pick of late. If they finish in the top-5 this year, it will mark the second time in the last three seasons (2020 and 2018) the Giants have had a premium draft pick.

It will also mark the fifth time in the last six seasons the Giants would have a top-10 draft pick, the lone exception over that period being in 2017 when they selected 23rd overall and plucked tight end Evan Engram out of Ole Miss in the first round.

Thus far, the Giants haven't gotten the most out of their premium picks, though to be fair, it's also still early enough in their careers.

Running back Saquon Barkley, chosen second overall in 2018, is the best of the bunch, but he is currently on injured reserve. There has also been some debate as to whether the coaching staffs have fully optimized Barkley's talents.

Quarterback Daniel Jones, chosen sixth overall in 2019, is still trying to find his footing in terms of reading defenses and, more importantly, putting a stop to a disturbing turnover habit.

And left tackle Andrew Thomas, chosen fourth overall this year, has had his rookie struggles as well, particularly with finding consistency in his game.

Despite having had a premium draft position, the Giants don't have much to show for it. Since going 11-5 in 2017, the Giants have a 12-41 record and a 9-28 mark so far in the Dave Gettleman era.

There's a lot of football left to be played to where the draft order will change, but barring a miraculous turnaround, it's looking as though the Giants will once again be a non-playoff team, which means they'll have a very good draft spot come next spring.
