In this story:

The NFL deadline to reach a multiyear deal with franchise players has officially passed, with the New York Giants and running back Saquon Barkley failing to agree to terms on a new multiyear contract.

Details continue to emerge regarding where the negotiations fell short, but with the deadline having passed, Barkley will have to play on the franchise tag, which will pay him a guaranteed $10.1 million once that is signed.

It also likely means that Barkley will skip most, if not all, of training camp, perhaps in an attempt to sway the Giants to add a clause to the franchise tag offer that promises him that he won't be tagged again next year.

There is also a possibility that Barkley skips the Giants' regular-season opener against Dallas, though if he were to miss games, that would cost him a little more than $545,000 for each game he missed.

With both sides having failed to meet in the middle on a new deal, Barkley's future with the team also becomes cloudy, especially if the Giants agree, as part of the current franchise tag, to not tag the running back again next year.

Meanwhile, Barkley assumes a significant risk in that if he suffers any injury, he potentially stands to cost himself future earnings.
