(From Harry K.) Hi Pat. Where do you think the Giants need to grow the most?
On the offense. I'd like to see more deep passes per game--nothing crazy but certainly at least a handful. I'd also like to see more pre-snap motion than last year. I think the coaches kept things simple because everyone was new to the system. But now I think we could see more pre-snap motion and shifts to help Daniel Jones better identify defenses.
(From Andy M.) Give me your surprise roster cut and your surprise roster addition.
Surprise roster cut? I'm going to go with inside linebacker Cam Brown, reluctantly. Brown's value is on special teams, but unless they plan to move him back to punt gunner, I'm not sure he fills enough roles to justify keeping, which would be a shame.
As for the surprise roster addition, I'm going to go with Bryce Ford-Wheaton. I think if he has a strong camp, the Giants will add him to the initial 53-man roster because there could be concern about him not passing through waivers.
(From Thomas M.) How do you see the receiver battle playing out?
What's up, Thomas? Assuming there are no injuries, I think Sterling Shepard and Wan'Dale Robinson are strong candidates for the PUP list and that the six receivers this team keeps will be Darius Slayton, Isaiah Hodgins, Parris Campbell, Jamison Crowder, Jalin Hyatt, and Jeff Smith. Then we'll see where things are at after six weeks--if there is an injury, one of Shepard or Robinson (or both) could be activated if ready.
(From Evan C.) What's the most difficult part of covering training camp?
The heat and it's not even close. Being out in the summer sun just zaps you of your energy to where you come home, and all you want to do is just take a nap--except there's no time for that. I've never been a fan of trying to work when I've come in from the heat and am sweaty, sticky, and dehydrated. But hey, you take the good with the bad when it comes to this job, including working through conditions that might not be your preference.
(From Mark T.) If Saquon doesn't sign a long-term deal, do you think this will be his last season in Giants Blue?
Depends, Mark. If Saquon plays on the tag and his production declines or he gets injured, I could see them moving on, especially if Eric Gray turns out to be what we think he'll be. But if Saquon stays healthy and is productive, I think we could see a repeat of what happened this past year regarding Barkley getting tagged again.
The difference, though, is the Giants will have to do contract extensions for Leonard Williams, Andrew Thomas, and Xavier McKinney if those three continue producing at a high level. I don't know that all three will get their deals done before the franchise tag window closes.
That said, Thomas is technically under contract for 2024. McKinney and Williams are not, so we'll have to see if general manager Joe Schoen looks to lock up one of them on an extension before this season ends (like during the bye week).
