New York Giants Week 9 Snap Counts

Almost one month to the day, the Giants recorded their second win of 2020, that coming against the Washington Football Team. Let’s take a look at some notables from the snap counts.

--Tight end Kaden Smith has quietly seen his per-game snaps on offense increase over the last three weeks. Smith hovered around 26 snaps per game through Week 6, but of late, he’s averaged 39 snaps in the previous three games.

Smith suffered a concussion in Sunday’s win, so we’ll see how that affects him moving forward, but with that said, it’s good to see Smith get increased playing time as he’s one of the offense’s most solid blocking tight ends.

--Running back Wayne Gallman logged 44 snaps, his highest total on offense. Interestingly, the Giants turned more to the running game starting in the second quarter, which kept the pass rush off Daniel Jones.

Gallman also has seen his carries per game slowly creep up over the last three weeks, going from 10 against the Eagles to 12 on Monday night against the Bucs to 14 against Washington. His 68 yards vs. Washington is a season-high.

--After peaking at a season-high 61 snaps in Weeks 6 and 7, defensive lineman Leonard Williams played in just 38 snaps, matching his season-low from Week 4. Still, Williams’ snaps were the most of the three starting defensive linemen.

--The final personnel groupings aren’t in yet, but based on the snap counts for the tight ends, the Giants ran a lot of 12-personnel this week, which no doubt corresponded with the heavier reliance on the running game and the Washington pass rush, which remains the strength of the team.

--Defensive end Dexter Lawrence played in a season-low 25 snaps, four fewer than Dalvin Tomlinson.

--Giants safeties Logan Ryan and Jabrill Peppers both took 100% of the snaps on defense, whereas the third safety in the package, Julian Love, played in just 23.

Meanwhile, Darnay Holmes, the nickel back, was in on 47 of the 54 snaps. Conclusion? The Giants ran more traditional nickel than their big Nickel (3-safety) package.

--Receiver Austin Mack, filling in for Golden Tate this week, logged a season-high 38 snaps, topping his Week 6 total when he filled in for Sterling Shepard.

Mack did well with his increased snaps to where it might just be time to consider giving him more snaps and not because a starter in front of him is missing.

--Jabaal Sheard and Trent Harris combined for 38 snaps, whereas Carter Coughlin and Cam Brown combined for six. Moving forward, let’s hope that the first number decreases and the second increases as there’s a lot to like about the two youngsters and what they bring to the pass rush.
