The New York Giants have signed veteran quarterback Matt Barkley off their practice squad and to the 53-man roster. Barkley will take the spot that opened after the team placed quarterback Daniel Jones (ACL) on injured reserve.

The Giants now have two quarterbacks on their roster, Barkley and rookie Tommy DeVito, and one on their practice squad, Jacob Eason, whom they signed Tuesday following his second workout for the team this year.

Jones joins Tyrod Taylor (ribs) on injured reserve.

DeVito was named as the starting quarterback for the Giants for this weekend's game against the Dallas Cowboys, head coach Brian Daboll announced on Wednesday. In two games played, both in relief of the starters, DeVito is 17-of-27 (63 percent) for 174 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions.

DeVito will be the first rookie free agent to ever start a regular-season game for the Giants in the common draft era (except for Jim Crocicchia in a 1987 strike-replacement game).

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, DeVito would also become the tenth undrafted rookie quarterback to start an NFL game since 2010. The combined career record of those nine quarterbacks is 7-20. But in their starting debuts, they were 5-4.

Jones will have surgery in a few weeks, though no specific date has been set as of this writing. Typically, there is a waiting period before ACL surgery to allow for the swelling in the area to subside.
