The New York Giants have signed quarterback Matt Barkley to their practice squad.

Barkley, one of two quarterbacks the Giants worked out a couple of weeks ago, was originally drafted out of USC in the fourth round by the Eagles in 2013. He spent three seasons with the Buffalo Bills (2018-2020), whose offensive coordinator at the time was current Giants head coach Brian Daboll.

Barkley, who also spent seasons with the Cardinals, Bears, Bengals, Panthers, and Falcons, has played in 19 career games with seven starts. He's completed 212 out of 363 pass attempts (58.4 percent) for 2,699 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 22 interceptions.

Giants Add Tommy DeVito to 53-man Roster

Barkley was on the Bills practice squad last year but was waived/injured at the end of the preseason.

The Giants, having signed Tommy DeVito to the 53-man roster, can now apply the emergency quarterback rule assuming Tyrod Taylor (ribs) doesn't end up missing any time due to his injury.

If Taylor has to miss time, the assumption is that the Giants will use three elevations on Barkley to elevate him as necessary.

The Giants released center Jaylon Thomas from their practice squad to make room for Barkley. The Giants also signed punt returner Gunner Olszewski, whom they have already said they are expecting to return punts for this weekend's game against the Las Vegas Raiders.
