2023 NFL Free Agency: Jaguars Re-Sign Tre Herndon

The veteran cornerback will return to Jacksonville for a sixth season.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are continuing to bring the band back together for 2023.

While the Jaguars have seen three players depart in right tackle Jawaan Taylor, pass-rusher Arden Key and tight end Chris Manhertz, they have brought back even more players from last year. Now, that list includes cornerback Tre Herndon.

The Jaguars officially re-signed Herndon on Saturday after agreeing to terms on Friday. The one-year deal is worth up to $2.6 million.

Herndon originally signed with the Jaguars in 2018 as an undrafted free agent and has played in 67 games (30 starts) from 2018-22. In his five-year career with Jacksonville, Herndon has posted 188 tackles (150 solo), 23 passes defensed and three INTs. In 2022, he played in 15 regular season games and posted 34 tackles and five passes defended.

"You try to keep your core together. You try to sign as many of your free agent players as you can. This business, you know you’re going to lose some. We try to sign them all if you can," Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson said at the NFL Scouting Combine earlier this month.

"We’ve got some talented guys that we’d like to have back, but we’ll wait and see, see how the process plays itself out. I think the difference for us is these are really good players we’d like to have back, then you build through this process. You build through the draft and just add depth and talent that way.”

Herndon has started both outside and in the slot for the Jaguars over the last several seasons, though most of his snaps down the stretch last season came with him inside and with cornerbacks Tyson Campbell and Darious Williams on the outside.
